Diplo & Santogold – Top Ranking

leave a comment »

Been enjoying Diplo & Santogold’s new mixtape Top Ranking over the weekend, and it’s actually really good. Lots of unreleased Diplo & Santogold collaborations and great contributions from long list people: Santi (duh), XXXchange, Ratatat, Richie Spice, Three 6 Mafia, B-52’s, Kid Cudi, Switch, Radioclit, Benga, Tony Matterhorn, Skream, Warrior Queen, Barrington Levy, and more. 75 minutes of pure fun, here’s a couple of previews:

Okkervil River – The Stand Ins

leave a comment »

Okkervil River is soon to release the sequel to last years awesome The Stage Names, it’s called The Stand Ins and will be released by Jagjaguwar in the beginning of September.

While recording The Stage Names, Will Sheff was playing with the idea of releasing a double album,  but they ended up deciding not to, and as Sheff later told Pitchfork “in the end I think sanity prevailed.” Well, maybe a Stage Names double album would have been a bit to much, but at least it’s a very sane decision one year later to release the second half of it as a kind of companion disc. Because just throwing these tunes away would have been pretty insane.

I’ve been listening to The Stand Ins for a couple of days now and I’m starting to understand why the idea of a double album must have sounded pretty tempting in the first place. The songs continues the story begun by The Stage Names, both musically and lyrically, listen closely and you’ll discover a lot of recurring themes. If you got both albums, listening to them back to back is a good idea, if you’re still waiting for The Stand Ins, here’s at least a couple of previews:
