Lindstrøm – Where You Go I Go Too

leave a comment »

After making waves with the acclaimed compilation “It’s Feedelity Affair” in 2006, Lindstrøm is getting ready to blow us away again with his new debut solo album, Where You Go I Go Too, that will only feature three tracks, all between 10 and 30 minutes and displaying a new approach he claims is “the opposite of minimalism”.

Lindstrøm’s solo debut LP, Where You Go I Go Too, is due August 18 from Smalltown Supersound/Feedelity.

Here’s the is the last of the three tracks “The Long Way Home,” reworked and cut down to six minutes in collaboration with long-time compadre Prins Thomas. Epic soft-rock disco!

Fleet Foxes – Fleet Foxes

with 2 comments

I spent the morning today listening to the new Fleet Foxes album while starting to re-read Jack Kerouac’s The Dharma Bums and let me tell you it’s a dangerous combination. Stuck in the middle of Berlin (Mitte), I just want to head of to the high Sierras, or any other mountain for that sake, and climb like crazy and maybe do a little yabyum… The combined effect of Kerouac’s spontaneous prose and the beautiful vintage-sounding rural psych folk of Fleet Foxes, is so strong that it awakes an adventurous lust of nature in all it’s forms and shapes.

If you liked Fleet Foxes’ Sun Giant EP, you’ll probably fall instantly in love with their self-titled debut album. See you in the mountains!

Crystal Stilts – Crystal Stilts

“Good artists copy. Great artists steal”
Pablo Picasso

“Collecting and studying old rock bands is a rite of passage for young men entering the scene”
– Hesmondhalgh (1999)

Brooklyn’s Crystal Stilts make some really good music and they really know their rock history too. Kiwi pop, shoegaze, jangle pop, garage, C86 all have a place in the musical landscape of Crystal Stilts. With these references they place themselves well inside what might be called the “indie canon” or the “creative space” of indie, which is a combination of the artist’s habitus of socially constructed subjectivities and the historical found of practices, the stylistic conventions and codes of the genre.

The creative space is a necessary starting point for creative action and it’s hard to break away from this. A short list of artists have throughout the history of rock been able to make new and less likely choices and in this way created generic change. However, it also exists another list, which maybe is bit longer but still is pretty exclusive, and that’s the list of artists that haven’t broken out of anything but still sounds inventive and fabulous. On this list I would like to sign up Crystal Stilts.

I’ve been listening to their new record a lot lately and I’m really impressed. On every song you can easily pick out a couple of pretty obvious references, but it doesn’t make the song in itself obvious. Instead of lumping references on top of each other, they tackle their influences head on and strip them to their bare essentials. Instead of trying to hide the influences they highlight them and bring out the best in them. The best example is probably the “just like honey” drums in “Crippled Croon”. Instead of making a bad copy, they steal it and make it their own. And instead of sounding outdated and hopelessly backwards looking, they sound vital and refreshing.

Further, and this is maybe the best part, it seems like they have conscious relationship to all this, this not music that happened by accident and it’s fair to expect much more great things from Crystal Stilts in the future. But first of all listen to this record. It’s awesome!
